Staff Changes
Mrs Fiona Gaby has been appointed as the substantive Principal at Devonport High School. Mrs Gaby contributed enormously to BHS during her nearly five years here, and we know that she will continue her great work for public education in her new role. Ms Sheree Hodgetts will continue to fill the role of Acting Assistant Principal for Term 3.
Mrs Rachel Kirkwood (HPE) will be on maternity leave from the end of Term 2. We wish Mrs Kirkwood all the best in her role as a new mum. Mr Ben Freshney joins our HPE team to teach Mrs Kirkwood’s classes. We welcome Mr Freshney to Burnie High School.
Mr Brad Poulter will be on accumulated leave for Terms 3 and 4. We are very sure he will enjoy this extended break. Ms Rebecca MacLachlan will join our Maths/Science team as Mr Poulter’s replacement.
Student drop off Zone
Due to recent ongoing concerns regarding the safety of students who are arriving in the morning and departing in the afternoon by bus, all parents were recently sent a text message asking them not to drive into this area to drop off or pick up students. The drop off and pick up zone for students arriving by car is the bottom driveway. There has been a marked improvement since this text message went out.
Eisteddfod
It is wonderful that this year our students have once again been able to participate in the Burnie Eisteddfod after an enforced break due to Covid restrictions in 2020. Our drama and music students had exceptional success! We congratulate the students who participated, and thank Mr Ben Lohrey, Miss Maree Welsh, and Miss Bronwyn Darvell for their hard work in preparing and supporting our students.
Cross Country
Congratulations to the outstanding team of students who represented our school at the Tasmanian Secondary All Schools Cross Country championships on Tuesday 29 June. In the Men’s Under 16 age group Riley Simpson dominated the field to take out first place, with Samuel Plapp finishing in fifth place. Grade 8 Isabel Gitzinger finished in twelfth place in the Women’s Under 16 age group. Archie Rogers placed eighth in the Men’s under 17 age group. Bruce Ross finished thirteenth in the Men’s Under 15 age group. A top sixteen finish saw runners selected for the Tasmanian Cross Country Team to compete in Adelaide in August. We wish all those students who have been selected the very best in their preparation.
BHS Football Grand Final
Congratulations to our Junior Boys’ football team who made the North West High Schools football grand final. Although they went down by to Marist Regional College, we are very proud of their efforts. Our Senior Boys likewise made it to the grand final and were victorious over Marist Regional College with a 71-point win. Congratulations to Finn McInnes for being selected as best on ground and an awesome effort by Jonty Blake who kicked 8 goals, Geordie Payne who kicked 5 goals and Taj Tonks who kicked 4 goals.
Monday 19 July Teacher Professional Learning Day/Student Free Day
Students return to school for the start of Term 3 on Tuesday 20 July. On Monday 19 July teachers will participate in a Professional Learning program and undertake preparations for Term 3.
I wish our families a safe and restful school holiday break.

On the 15th, 16th & 17th of June, 80 Drama students across Grades 8, 9 and 10 participated with outstanding success at the Burnie Drama Eisteddfod. The students were successful in receiving 23 first place awards, 15 second place awards, 6 third place awards and 9 honourable mentions. This was a magnificent achievement and the students should be extremely proud of what they achieved. It is also very important to acknowledge the many other terrific performances by our Burnie High students who weren’t lucky enough to receive a place but who still performed to the best of their ability.
For many students, particularly the large contingent of 38 students from Grade 8, this Eisteddfod represented their first public performance and they are to be commended for the awesome job that they did in stepping out of their comfort zone and producing their best effort.
A number of special awards were presented at the Grand Final Concert on Saturday June 26. Special congratulations are extended to Jai Mollison who received the Iris Graham Memorial Encouragement Award, Millie Ferguson and Leilani Zetovic who won the Beryl Harris Memorial Prize for Speech and Drama, Archie Rogers who won the Dorothy and Barry Cunningham Outstanding Performance Award and Shakyla Dunham who won the Harcourts Encouragement Impromptu Award.
These represent outstanding achievements by these students and they are thoroughly deserving recipients.
It was an absolute privilege and a pleasure to work with such a wonderful group of students and we look forward to an equally successful Eisteddfod in 2021.

BHS had 8 netball teams in the BNA Winter roster this year which is over 70 players plus coaches and supporters. It is a big season and BHS were once again very successful.
After a round 1 loss, which they blamed on being on court 4, BHS 1 were undefeated for the rest of the season, also playing the West Coast team here at school and winning 64-2. After dominating all season, they won the B1 grand final against Marist. Congratulations girls and thank you to Mel Rolls for coaching the team this year. Co-captains Lottee Rolls and Ellie Sushames presented the winning shield to Ms Durkin in assembly this week.
The B2 team were also difficult to beat this year after training hard and playing under the guidance of Lyn Odgers. They were able to comfortably win their grand final against Marist. Well done girls, and thanks to Lyn for all her time and efforts. Kiara Gleeson presented the B2 trophy to Ms Durkin on behalf of the B2 team.
The B3 team also made it to their grand final but couldn’t match the Penguin team this year. Thank you to Marion Ferguson for coaching the team this season.
In the A1 competition, the BHS team were easy winners each week and were awarded the A1 premiership in unprecedented circumstances. State commitments meant that several players would have missed the GF so BHS were awarded the premiership following the preliminary final for dominating the season this year. They also won convincingly in the West Coast exchange earlier in the year. Thank you to Leeah Bacon for coaching the A1 team this year. Lara Sushames and Tyrah Bacon presented the shield to Ms Durkin in assembly this week.
The A1 girls are travelling to Launceston next term to play in the High School Championship. We wish them all the best at this tournament.
A big thank you also to the remaining players, coaches and parents who supported the BHS teams this year. It is a big commitment and we thank you very much for all that you do. Spring roster starts in August for mixed teams.
- Abbey Pennington, Coach
The digital world is expanding every day and comes with so many benefits. As with most things, it also presents some risks to society. With the continual development of technology, it is hard to keep up with what high school aged children are doing on their devices and online platforms. The ‘BHS Digital’ will endeavour to give parents and carers resources to become more aware of the digital dilemmas our student’s face.
BHS Digital Article of the month
When it comes to technology, parents may seem a little in the dark; Millennials and the generations to follow them were born with devices in their hands and it may seem like parents can never catch up.

AGRICULTURE STUDIES and FARM NEWS
Zeke, Jaylen and Jaxon are showcasing the BHS Garden and Farm. Their fitness gear / wear complements their sturdy boots very nicely and reminds us that working outside requires the strength, endurance, the willingness and capacity to get down and dirty to produce our Food and Fibre.
The previous Spring and Summer hatchings meant we had a lot of roosters. Students have learned about reproduction and breeding as well as food security and economics at a basic level.
- Aileen helps Dyson pluck and “gut” a chicken
- Sam holds “Taya” the Aracauna Hen for a feather cut
- Sandon holds “Melaiyne” before her wing clip
- Craig and Melissa our “mixed” breed chooks.
Students engage in a range of hands on activities that use and promote the use of skills relevant to other subjects across the curriculum as well as “life” and work skills. They are able to work outside to demonstrate responsibility, trust worthiness and safety.
- Cooper and Miah with their Primary Industry Burgers
- Aileen, Jonty and Samuel take care of another rooster
- Barbara our new Australorp hen for our breeding program
- Bryan talks all things gizzard and the role grit and gravel in poultry digestion (plus the meat on this muscle is the best part of the bird)
- Paddock to Plate and, 6. Melaiyne and Taya with their Primary Industry Burgers.
- Bailee and Harris put the posts up for the grape and berry vines
- Ben pig proofs a gate
- Zeke and Noah find a solution for crossing the “quick sand” (mud bog) into the pig pen
- Sebastien and Jakobi clip Geoffrey the Turkey’s wings and
- Bao and Bun have a feast of warm boiled potatoes on a cold and rainy afternoon.
As the days get longer and hopefully warmer in the coming months there will be plenty more to do!! The poultry will lay eggs, pigs will get fatter, the Alpacas will need shearing, the seedlings (ALL crops have been germinated from seed by BHS students) will bear “fruit” (broccoli, cabbages, cauliflowers, lettuces, etc) and we will have some calves coming to stay for our annual COWS CREATE CAREERS!

Burnie High School have just launched a new and improved version of the Student Wellbeing Hub. All students will have an information session on the purpose of the resource and how it can help them. The Student Wellbeing Hub is an online webpage that directs students to useful and relevant resources for help in relation to the challenges high school students face.
Some students might not know who to talk to and where to go for help with concerns like body image, sexuality, mental health, relationships, anxiety and many more topics. The Student Wellbeing Hub is designed to help individuals confronted with questions for themselves, helping a friend and parents/carers to help their children.
Some key features of the Student Wellbeing Hub include:
- External support service phone numbers, online chat and physical addresses
- Videos for self help (regulating emotions and understanding)
- Apps to help students with mental health
- Real Stories of others living through these issues
- How to help others
- Parents/carers support
- Reporting digital bullying
- Fact sheets
- Reporting bullying at Burnie High School
How can I access the BHS Student Wellbeing Hub?
Students, staff, parents and carers can access the website through the Burnie High School webpage https://burniehigh.education.tas.edu.au/ under the students tab at any time of the day with an internet connection or directly at https://bhswellbeinghub.wixsite.com/student
Over the past few weeks in Italian, students have been busy learning the language, as well as other aspects of Italian culture.
Grade 7 have been learning about schooling in Italy and how to ask questions. Grade 8 have been talking about the weather. While the Senior Italian class have been learning about rooms of the house and designing their dream Italian home.
On top of this, each class has been back in the kitchen cooking up a storm with some hand-made pasta. All meals were lovingly hand crafted by students and enjoyed thoroughly.
Buon appetito!
Welcome to the world of precision designing and all things budding engineers!! We will make a blooper’s page for everyone’s entertainment but for this Newsletter we will celebrate the fine tuning of our “cars”.
The success criteria for this project was to see how far students’ cars could go in a STRAIGHT line…. Then convert units of measurement and use the Speed, Distance, Time equations in order to conclude who had the fastest car. Watch this space for our final conclusions.
Ayden is ensuring he is wiring his motor to the correct spots; Bryce is the fastest X-country runner in his Age Group but is his car the fastest in THIS field??; Anina – best glue gun and a pretty cool vehicle (bottom RHS). Harry – he has a great car and has endured all sorts of hiccups to make it “work” – Henry Ford and Thomas Edison would be proud (the car is NOT wrong Harry you simply made a “Front Wheel” drive)!! Watch this space for the final instalment and video links in the BHS July Edition of the Newsletter.

Would YOU be interested?
Burnie High now has a 'craft group' getting together once a week, which is held during period 3 on Thursdays with Krissie the School Chaplain and Miss Beecham from Home Ec. It commenced on Thursday June 17, 2021.
If you are interested in participating in a practical activities group of like-minded people, with the aim to link up with students in Uganda, Africa to help improve their quality of life then please see Krissie, Miss Beecham or put your name down at the office.
One project which seems to be of most importance in the Ugandan community involves learning to sew washable/reusable sanitary pads.
There is no cost to participate in this group, just a signed parent permission form available on request.
