Principal’s Column School Newsletter Friday 22 October 2021
Hello everyone and welcome to the first edition of the Burnie High School newsletter for Term 4. It is hard to believe that we are down to just eight more weeks of the 2021 school year. Whilst it is a busy term for all students, we know that our Grade 10’s will be especially excited as they make important decisions about their upcoming transition to a Hellyer Collective school or into the world of work. I encourage our Grade 10 students to make the most of the rich learning opportunities and extra curricula activities that are still to come this term.
Over the coming weeks we also look forward to welcoming our 2022 Grade 7 students as they undertake a range of transition activities with their Grade Leaders Mr Joshua Salter and Miss Eloise Crocker.
Student Free Day
A reminder that Friday 29 October is a Student Free Day. This day has been approved by the Minister of Education to allow teachers to engage in professional learning.
BHS Turning Pink Week
I would like to acknowledge and thank the SRC, Mr Munday and Giovanna Simpson for the work they have put in to bring our school ‘Turning Pink Week’. As well as lots of fun it has given us the opportunity to be able to join with the Burnie City Council to raise money to support the McGrath Foundation. We thank our students and families for their generosity in purchasing the pink items that have been for sale and we thank our teachers who volunteered to be a part of the sponge throwing fund raiser.
Gala on the Green
What great news it is that the BHS Gala on the Green will be going ahead on Friday 19 November. All home groups are currently finalising their offerings. Many activities will be free of charge, while some may have a small fee just to cover costs. I plan on trying the Chocolate Fountain Fondue, having a go at Archery, and finding out what Skinny Ball is.
Attendance and Grade 10 Exams
Congratulations to our Grade 10’s on the inspiring best effort you have brought forth in undertaking your exams. Your teachers and I have been very impressed with your high attendance rate and the mature way you have behaved. Keep up the good work!

Netball Championship State Finals
First up we played St Patricks’ College and, after a slow first quarter, we were unable to bridge the gap in the score line, going down by 10 points. The second and third quarters of that game were amazing to watch as the team really pulled together to get within 2 points at the three quarter time break. In the second game, a few minor errors saw MacKillop College score three unanswered goals and BHS lost by 3. This was the most disappointing result of the day as we were on top around the court for the majority of this game.
An all-Burnie play off in the last game between Burnie High School and Marist Regional College saw many of the girls match-up against those they already play with or against in coastal games. The final was played in great spirits and BHS came away with the win by 10 points, placing them fifth overall on the day. Aside from the results of the games, BHS showed tremendous talent, teamwork and resilience and played hard until the final whistle in each game. They should be proud of themselves and the way they represented the school and the North West Coast.
A big thankyou to Leeah Bacon and Allison Sushames for coaching and umpiring throughout the two tournaments, your knowledge of the game and how to get the best out of each players is amazing.

Here are some shots from our first Bagpipe workshop on Wednesday 13 October.
Michael from the Burnie Highland Pipe Band brought along the chanters for the Production Band students to learn how to play.
We started working on the bagpipe scale, and the music for the bagpipe solo in “It’s a Long Way to the Top” by AC/DC.
The time spent people on social media platforms is increasing each and every day. What are the impacts this is having on young people and how do we balance the positives and negative of such powerful and influential platforms?
