Once again, the end of the term has rolled around much too quickly, however, I am grateful to see the end of winter come, the days start to draw out and the temperature starts to go up.
Sleeping Beauty
The great big, amazing highlight of Term 3 has undoubtedly been the staging of the Burnie High School production Sleeping Beauty. I congratulate the cast, crew, staff, parents, and community helpers who contributed with their enthusiasm, time, and energy to enthral and entertain us to a very high standard.
Mr Lohrey, Miss Welsh and Miss Darvell are to be congratulated in their pivotal roles in putting the production together. They have been well supported at the Arts and Function Centre by Mr Salter, Mr Douglas, Miss Crocker, Mrs Dilger, Mrs Wells and Miss Turner.
However, we must also recognise the extra workload that teachers back at Burnie High School undertook during the alternate timetable. They ensured that students who were not involved in the production had an engaging and worthwhile learning program during this time.
Grade 10 Enrolments
On Tuesday and Wednesday of next week our Grade 10 students and their parents/carers will meet with Hellyer Course Counsellors to finalise their enrolments for 2022. Burnie High School teachers have worked throughout this year with our Grade 10 students to prepare them for this very significant step in their transition to Grade 11.
Footy Colours Day
Friday 24 September (last day of term 3) will be an out of uniform footy colours day. A gold coin donation please.
Term 4 Staffing
Mrs Chloe Strochnetter returns to us following 12 months of leave. Those classes who will be having a change of teacher for Term 4 will be advised next week. Ms Anne McCulloch will be on leave for the first two weeks of Term 4. Our School Business Manager Ms Chris Philip is having leave for Term 4 and will be replaced by Mrs Lois Cameron. We wish Chris a restful and enjoyable break.
Covid-19 Vaccinations
Everyone in Australia aged 12 years and over can now receive a COVID-19 vaccination. There will be a Burnie Youth Clinic (12 to 17 years only) at the Burnie Arts & Function Centre on Saturday 9 October 9am to 5pm. Dose 2 will be delivered on 30 October. To book appointments click on the following link. Community clinics | Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)
Term Four
Term four commences on Monday 11 October.
I would like to remind parents that Friday, October 29 is an approved Professional Learning Day for staff and as such students are not required to attend school.
I wish all our students, staff and families a restful spring break!

Burnie High School's production of Sleeping Beauty
We are extremely proud of all the students and staff who have participated in the Sleeping Beauty production which officially opened this month.
It has been a fantastic performance by 200 creative and talented young people!
‘Director Ben Lohrey said the production wasn't what an audience may ordinarily expect from Sleeping Beauty with the students putting their own unique twist on the much-loved story.
Part of the excitement is choosing music which we think is going to work for the show and get the kids excited and inspired," he said.
"We have a whole range of music in the show from the '50s and '60s right through to things that have been released in the last few
"We found being able to incorporate music that not only they are familiar with, but their parents' generation is familiar with, really works."
Mr Lohrey said the production involved 200 students who had been working together for six months.’

Girls' Football Gala Days
Burnie High School sent two teams to the recent Girls’ Football Gala Day, hosted by AFL Tasmania, held at Marist College. There was a wide range of experience levels amongst the teams with many kicking the ball and tackling for the first time and others already playing for local football teams.
In the Year 7/8 team the girls were immediately into the game, asking each other questions and quickly picking up the pace and rules of the game. They were unfortunate to miss the finals, finishing fifth overall.
All the girls had a great day, with some keen to sign up for the local roster next year.
In the Year 9/10 tournament, BHS were unlucky not to make the Grand Final, finishing in third position on the ladder on percentage. The girls went on to easily defeat Parklands High in the consolation final. Again, many showed great talent and skill and would easily fit in to a local team.
I encourage all girls to go along to the pre-season and continue to pursue football as their sport. The AFLW may be in their future!

Italian
Ciao!
This term our Year 7 and Senior Classes have been cooking up a storm in Italian. Both classes enjoyed working in the cucina (kitchen) on some Double Chocolate Biscotti, while the Senior class also worked on perfecting the Cioccolata Calda (Italian hot chocolate). Although our Grade class missed out on cooking, they will be learning all about Italian cibo (food) in Term 4 with plenty of cooking to be completed.
In the classroom this term, our students learnt a variety of words and phrases on the following topics:
Grade 7 – la famiglia (the family)
Grade 8 – trasporto (transport)
Senior – I vestiti e moda (clothing and fashion)
Students have continued to enjoy working on Duolingo also, a free language learning app for anyone to use. So, jump on board families and learn another language at no cost!
Arrivederci!

NORTH WEST 3X3 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
On Thursday August 5, Burnie High was represented at the NW 3x3 Basketball Tournament with 7 teams.
All competitors are to be praised on their organisation, teamwork and leadership throughout the day.
All teams made it through to compete in semi-finals at the end of the day with the Year 7 and 9 boys being knocked out in some controversial circumstances!
Our Year 8 and 10 boys and Grade 10 girls were unsuccessful in the grand final, all losing by a narrow margin.
The Year 8 and 9 girls were both victorious in their respective grand final games with convincing wins.
It was a pleasure to see Burnie High students compete to a high standard of competition in what was a fast paced and busy day for all teams.
More information will be communicated via students in regard to the annual Basketball Tournament to be held in October this year.

Material Design and Technology
MDT
This month has seen the culmination of a lot of work in the MDT department.
The second major woodwork project, the “Wine Table” has been completed by a large number of students.
The feature and ‘flavour’ of the wine tables this year has been the inclusion of CNC routed designs in the table tops. CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) routers are a peripheral that requires a design to be created on a computer which can then be sent to the router for engraving.
Mr Nathan Wells has overseen the incorporation of this cutting edge technology into our program.
Parents can look forward to some interesting and innovative furniture making it’s way home.

YEAR 9 / 10 METALWORK
Metalwork students have been honing their skills by engineering some high-quality tools.
These examples will take pride of place and see many years of accurate service in their owner’s tool kits.
Josie Demo has fabricated a quality Engineer’s square with a high gloss finish.
Caleb Groenewege has created an exquisite marking Gauge from mild steel with brass fittings. It features a cutting disc rather than a scratching spur.
Well done to all students who have completed these impressive items.

Hospitality Showcase 2021
Recently 37 students from our Senior Foods classes attended the Tasmanian Hospitality Association (THA) Showcase 2021 at the Providore Place in Devonport. Along with several other schools from the area our keen students were led by a team of young, enthusiastic, industry experts to participate in a variety of hands on, interactive & fun activities in Bar, Kitchen & Barista workstations.
At the conclusion of the morning session, our students were given the opportunity to participate in a Q&A panel with the industry experts.
